Why does my product fail in use?
Anyone who develops products that contain electronics, is familiar with the problem of products that fail in use. It is both annoying and frustrating - and not least expensive - to correct these errors when the product is already on the market.

Why do products fail in use? And how can we design reliable and robust products, and thereby avoid these faults? That is the theme of DELTA's October conference 'Development of reliable products based on Physics of Failure', where we share the latest findings and methods in Physics of Failure. Here you can learn about the physics behind product failures and become better equipped to develop reliable and robust products.

The conference will be held 31 October in Hørsholm - sign up to the right in the newsletter.

New report concludes: Motorways are more annoying than urban roads
DELTA has assisted the Danish Road Directorate in a socio-acoustic survey. The results from the survey were quite surprising and so interesting that we would like to share them with our DELTA Agenda readers.
New standard provides an overview of accelerated testing
The focus on the reduction of time-to-market and competitive prices increases the need for efficient and effective accelerated testing. There are also now requirements for the documentation of lifetime in some of the new product standards.
SAM – an efficient tool in failure analysis of electronic devices
Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (SAM) is a unique non-destructive technique for microelectronic failure analysis. It has a variety of application areas such as analysis of package integrity and adhesion quality of interfaces in complex devices. The SAM technique is unique for analysis of adhesion quality between layers and presence of possible flaws in each layer. It can be used to investigate e.g. sealing, coating, and flip-chip underfill quality - providing a resolution down to sub-micron thicknesses. This makes SAM a very useful tool in failure analysis of electronic devices.

In this article, SAM’s versatile usage for interface quality investigations of electronic devices is presented. Also, successful SAM analyses of different subjects and failures are demonstrated for:
  • Voids in underfill material in flip-chip ICs
  • Delamination investigation for round objects for different adjacent layers.
  • Coating quality for air bubbles
  • Delamination and package integrity in obsolete components
Hearing aids undergoing rapid development – updated standards are needed
Since mid-90s hearing aids have developed from simple analogue amplifiers into digital multifunctional medical devices with in-built wireless functions. The development of modern hearing aids is dominated to a great degree by Danish industry – together Oticon, Resound and Widex are responsible for nearly half of all sales worldwide.
