Predict your product´s reliability
Product reliability is in focus as electronic products become still more complex and form part of complex systems. Development departments are now simulating product reliability early in the development process using computer simulation tools. The trend shows that reliability is built into the design of electronic products, and concepts such as 'Predictive and preventive maintenance' gain momentum.

At SPM's knowledge exchange meetings, experts have shared and accumulated extensive knowledge about reliability for 50 years. In this edition of Agenda, we share this knowledge from SPM, so you can become wiser about the future requirements for reliability in products.

Enjoy your reading.

Failure analysis of a product – not only a component
Classic failure analysis (FA) technique generally deals with a single failed component in a complete product to detect the root cause of failure. This approach is inexpensive and less time-consuming. However, this may end up with a wrong interpretation of the product failure or overlooking the synergetic effect of different components related to the failure.
Requirements for sub-suppliers of medical devices
Sourcing is a well-known concept and it is here to stay. Further sourcing has become a fixed element of product development and production. The continuous globalisation means that suppliers can originate from all over the world. Hence, they may not necessarily be familiar with the requirements that apply on the individual market, which is why it is the manufacturer’s job to ensure that these requirements are met.
What does a motorway sound like?
Noise is often a big issue in public debates about new road projects. It is only natural that neighbours and other interested parties would like to know how the project will affect the surroundings. Here, the use of auralisations presented at public meetings is a huge improvement to explain the scope and impact of road noise.
What to do when your product does not match a harmonised standard
When a manufacturer wants or needs official confirmation that his product complies with the relevant directive e.g. the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) or the EMC directive, he can request a notified body to examine his product documentation. But how are the notified bodies aligned such that the outcome of an examination will be practically the same regardless which notified body you chose from the list of notified bodies provided by EU? This is important as the manufacturer cannot just go to another notified body if he does not like the examination result of the first one.
SPM then, now and in the future
SPM is a unique network association where professionals for the past 50 years have created and shared knowledge about what is needed to make products reliable and robust. “Denmark to be at the forefront in terms of reliable product development” was the driving vision when SPM was founded in 1967. Today, the association can look back at numerous examples of this vision coming true.
